- धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः ।
- मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय ॥१॥

English
The great war of the Mahabharata is about to begin. The armies of the Pandavas and the Kauravas have assembled on the vast battlefield of Kurukshetra, ready for the decisive conflict.
But Kurukshetra is more than a battlefield. It is known as Dharmakshetra — the sacred field of dharma, where righteousness and duty stand at the heart of the coming war.
In the royal palace, the blind King Dhritarashtra is anxious to learn what is happening. He turns to Sanjaya, his trusted counsellor, who has been granted divine vision by the sage Vyasa, enabling him to witness events on the distant battlefield.
Dhritarashtra asks:
“What did my sons and the sons of Pandu do after assembling on the sacred land of Kurukshetra, eager for battle?”
This question opens the Bhagavad Gita, setting the stage for a profound exploration of duty, righteousness, attachment, and the choices that shape human life.
Note: Sanjay is the son of Gavangana.

महाभारत का महान युद्ध आरंभ होने वाला है। कुरुक्षेत्र की विशाल रणभूमि में पांडवों और कौरवों की सेनाएँ आमने-सामने खड़ी हैं। दोनों पक्ष युद्ध के लिए तैयार हैं और अब धर्म तथा अधर्म के बीच होने वाले इस महायुद्ध का आरंभ होने ही वाला है।
लेकिन कुरुक्षेत्र केवल एक युद्धभूमि नहीं है। इसे धर्मक्षेत्र कहा गया है — अर्थात धर्म और कर्तव्य की पवित्र भूमि। यही वह स्थान है जहाँ मनुष्य के धर्म, उसके कर्तव्य और उसके निर्णयों की वास्तविक परीक्षा होने वाली है।
उधर हस्तिनापुर के राजमहल में बैठे अंधे राजा धृतराष्ट्र युद्ध के परिणाम को लेकर चिंतित हैं। वे जानना चाहते हैं कि कुरुक्षेत्र में उनके पुत्रों और उनके छोटे भाई पांडु के पुत्रों के बीच क्या हो रहा है।
वे अपने विश्वसनीय सारथी और सलाहकार संजय से प्रश्न करते हैं। महर्षि वेदव्यास ने संजय को दिव्य दृष्टि प्रदान की थी, जिसके माध्यम से वे राजमहल में बैठे-बैठे ही दूर कुरुक्षेत्र में घट रही घटनाओं को देख सकते थे।
धृतराष्ट्र संजय से पूछते हैं—
“हे संजय! धर्मभूमि कुरुक्षेत्र में युद्ध की इच्छा से एकत्र हुए मेरे पुत्रों और पांडु के पुत्रों ने क्या किया?”
इसी प्रश्न के साथ श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता का आरंभ होता है। यह केवल एक युद्ध की कथा नहीं, बल्कि धर्म, कर्तव्य, मोह और जीवन के कठिन निर्णयों को समझने की एक महान यात्रा की शुरुआत है।
