Maa Lakshmi Mantras

1. Simple Mantra

ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः।

Om Śrīṃ Mahālakṣmyai Namaḥ

This is the simplest mantra of all, and a devotee can do 108 japa of this mantra without any initiation or expertise.

Meaning and Explanation

The mantra says we bow down our heads to Maa Mahalakshmi through the divine word “Shring”.

2. Mahalakshmi Gayatri Mantra

ॐ महालक्ष्म्यै च विद्महे
विष्णुपत्न्यै च धीमहि ।
तन्नो लक्ष्मीः प्रचोदयात् ॥

Om Mahalakshmyai Cha Vidmahe
Vishnupatnyai Cha Dhimahi
Tanno Lakshmih Prachodayat

Meaning and Explanation

• We contemplate Mahalakshmi (ॐ महालक्ष्म्यै च विद्महे), the great Goddess.
• We meditate upon the consort of Lord Vishnu (विष्णुपत्न्यै च धीमहि).
• May Goddess Lakshmi inspire and illuminate our intellect(तन्नो लक्ष्मीः प्रचोदयात्).

3. Mahalakshmi Ashtakam

This is an Ashtakam, which is a poem dedicated to Maa Lakshmi in 8 Stanzas.

The latter part is called (फलश्रुति) and is sung to make the listener aware of its benefits. The same can also be found after different stutis like Shree Kal Bhairav Ashtakam and Maa Durga 108 Naam Japa.

श्री महालक्ष्म्यष्टकम्

First Stanza

नमस्तेऽस्तु महामाये श्रीपीठे सुरपूजिते ।
शङ्खचक्रगदाहस्ते महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥

English

• We bow to mother Lakshmi, who sits at the divine throne and is worshipped by devas and gods.
• She holds Shankha, Chakra, and Gadaa in her hands (the 4th hand is in abhaya mudra for blessing). We bow to her.

Hindi

हे महालक्ष्मी! आप महामाया, अर्थात् महान दिव्य शक्ति हैं। आप श्रीपीठ पर विराजमान हैं और देवताओं द्वारा पूजित हैं। आपके हाथों में शंख, चक्र और गदा हैं। हे महालक्ष्मी, मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ।

Second Stanza

नमस्ते गरुडारूढे कोलासुरभयङ्करि ।
सर्वपापहरे देवि महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥

English

• Hey divine mother, you are sitting on Garuda (the Vahan of Vishnu), and you instigate fear in the heart of Kolasur (asur is equivalent to demon).
• You destroy the bad karma (paap) in our lives; we bow down to you, mother.

• हे महालक्ष्मी! आप गरुड़ पर आरूढ़ हैं और कोलासुर नामक असुर के लिए भय का कारण बनी हैं।
• हे देवी, आप सभी पापों और नकारात्मक कर्मों का नाश करने वाली हैं। मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ।

Third Stanza

सर्वज्ञे सर्ववरदे सर्वदुष्टभयङ्करि ।
सर्वदुःखहरे देवि महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥

English

• Hey Devi, you know everything, you grant every wish of your devotee, you instill fear in the minds of evil. You end all sorrow, Devi Mahalakshmi; we bow down to you.

Hindi

• हे सर्वज्ञ देवी! आप सभी वर प्रदान करने वाली हैं और दुष्ट शक्तियों के लिए भय उत्पन्न करने वाली हैं। आप सभी के दुःखों को दूर करने वाली हैं। हे महालक्ष्मी, मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ।

Fourth Stanza

सिद्धिबुद्धिप्रदे देवि भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायिनि ।
मन्त्रपूते सदा देवि महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥

English

• You give us glory and wisdom, oh Devi. You bless us with worldly desires and also liberate our souls. I am bowing down to you, Devi Mahalakshmi.

Hindi

• हे देवी! आप सिद्धि और बुद्धि प्रदान करने वाली हैं। आप सांसारिक सुख-समृद्धि (भुक्ति) और आध्यात्मिक मुक्ति (मुक्ति) दोनों प्रदान करती हैं। हे महालक्ष्मी, मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ।

Fifth Stanza

आद्यन्तरहिते देवि आद्यशक्तिमहेश्वरि ।
योगजे योगसम्भूते महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥

English

• You do not have either any beginning or any end (meaning eternal). You are the primordial power. You are born out of Yog (havan, referring to the Samudra Manthan). We bow down to you, Devi Mahalakshmi.

Hindi

• हे देवी! आपका न आदि है न अंत। आप आद्यशक्ति, अर्थात् मूल और प्रथम दिव्य शक्ति हैं। हे महान ईश्वरी! आप योग से उत्पन्न और योग की शक्ति से प्रकट होने वाली हैं। हे महालक्ष्मी, मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ।

Sixth Stanza

स्थूलसूक्ष्ममहाद्रौद्रे महाशक्तिमहोदरे ।
महापापहरे देवि महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥

English

• You are present on Earth in both visible and invisible (divine) forms. You have infinite power inside you. You remove all bad karma from us. Devi Mahalakshmi, we bow to you.

Hindi

• हे देवी! आप स्थूल और सूक्ष्म दोनों रूपों में विद्यमान हैं। आप महान शक्ति का स्वरूप हैं और आपके भीतर अपार शक्ति समाहित है। आप बड़े-बड़े पापों का नाश करने वाली हैं। हे महालक्ष्मी, मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ।

Seventh Stanza

पद्मासनस्थिते देवि परब्रह्मस्वरूपिणि ।
परमेशि जगन्मातर्महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥

English

• You sit on the Lotus flower. You are an aspect of the all-powerful god (param brahma). Ohh goddess, you are the mother of all creation; we bow down to you, Maha Lakshmi.

Hindi

• हे देवी! आप कमल के आसन पर विराजमान हैं। आप परब्रह्म के स्वरूप में हैं। हे परमेश्वरी, हे सम्पूर्ण जगत की माता, हे महालक्ष्मी, मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ।

Eighth Stanza

श्वेताम्बरधरे देवि नानालङ्कारभूषिते ।
जगःस्थिते जगन्मातर्महालक्ष्मि नमोऽस्तुते ॥

English

• You are clad in white clothes and adorned with jewelry. You are present everywhere, and the whole world is your offspring. Hey Devi Mahalakshmi, we bow down to you.

• हे देवी! आप श्वेत वस्त्र धारण करती हैं और विभिन्न आभूषणों से सुशोभित हैं। आप सम्पूर्ण जगत में स्थित हैं और जगत की माता हैं। हे महालक्ष्मी, मैं आपको नमन करता हूँ।

Benefits of Reciting (फलश्रुति) Mahalakshmi Ashtakam

1st Stanza

महालक्ष्म्यष्टकं स्तोत्रं यः पठेद्भक्तिमान्नरः ।
सर्वसिद्धिमवाप्नोति राज्यं प्राप्नोति सर्वदा ॥

English

• One who recites the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam, he gets all types of accomplishments in his life. He leads a luxurious life.

Hindi

• जो व्यक्ति भक्तिपूर्वक महालक्ष्मी अष्टकम् का पाठ करता है, वह सभी प्रकार की सिद्धियाँ प्राप्त करता है और सदैव राज्य या ऐश्वर्य प्राप्त करता है।

2nd Stanza

एककाले पठेन्नित्यं महापापविनाशनम् ।
द्विकालं यः पठेन्नित्यं धनधान्यसमन्वितः ॥

English

• Those who recite it once every day (in the early morning) have their bad karma destroyed. Those who recite it twice per day (early morning and evening) get plenty of wealth and food.

Hindi

• जो व्यक्ति प्रतिदिन एक समय इस स्तोत्र का पाठ करता है, उसके बड़े पाप नष्ट होते हैं। और जो प्रतिदिन दो समय इसका पाठ करता है, वह धन और अन्न-धान्य से संपन्न होता है।

3rd Stanza

त्रिकालं यः पठेन्नित्यं महाशत्रुविनाशनम् ।
महालक्ष्मीर्भवेन्नित्यं प्रसन्ना वरदा शुभा ॥

English

• Those who recite this three times a day, i.e., morning, afternoon, and evening, are able to destroy their enemies. Mahalakshmi is always happy on them and grants them auspicious wishes.

Hindi

• जो व्यक्ति प्रतिदिन तीनों समय इस स्तोत्र का पाठ करता है, उसके बड़े शत्रुओं का नाश होता है। महालक्ष्मी उस पर सदैव प्रसन्न रहती हैं और शुभ वरदान प्रदान करती हैं।
